The nature of these transport operations is important. This is not a full replacement for traditional long-haul trucking, but a targeted use of autonomous technology in an environment where the route, driving frequency, safety parameters and warehouse process connections can be precisely managed.

The first commercial projects confirm that the future of logistics will not be only about the vehicle itself. The real change lies in connecting transport, data, planning, safety and operational control.


An autonomous vehicle can help improve the predictability of regular lanes, support better capacity utilisation and reduce dependence on certain operational limitations. At the same time, it also raises new questions around legislation, liability, safety and integration into everyday transport operations.

Europe Will Move at a Different Pace

The US market offers a more flexible environment for autonomous vehicles in some regions. Europe is likely to proceed more cautiously, mainly because of cross-border transport, different national regulations, denser infrastructure and higher requirements for harmonised rules.


That does not mean the trend is irrelevant for Europe. Digital transport documents, e-CMR, eFTI, predictive planning and data-driven logistics all point in the same direction. Logistics is becoming a more technology-driven industry.

The Driver Will Not Disappear, but the Role Will Change

Autonomous transport is often linked to the question of whether it will replace drivers. A more realistic view is that the structure of work will change. In selected transport operations, technology may take over part of the routine driving process, while people will remain essential for supervision, handling exceptional situations, customer communication, cargo handling and operational control.


In logistics, the key topic will therefore not be only a vehicle without a driver. It will be the entire system of transport management.
